LMP’s Ungár buys stake in news site

Former LMP executive committee member Péter Ungár has bought a stake in news website Azonnali, fellow new site Index reported on Saturday.

Azonnali has a few journalists and Ungár wants to boost the team primarily with staff members of the now defunct political daily Magyar Nemzet.

Ungár indicated that he would be willing to buy Magyar Nemzet when the daily folded in April. But owner Lajos Simicska did not sell it to him since Simicska, reportedly, saw no guarantees that the daily would not end up with Fidesz.

Ungár has said several times that his mother, Mária Schmidt, and he have inherited billions of forints, which entails a certain responsibility.

Ungár, through a family business, also has a stake in pro-government political weekly Figyelő and the LMP-related Reflektor blog is also associated with him.

It is unusual for an MP to own a media organ, but Ungár now has stakes in three news outlets, Népszava noted.

Sources regularly consulted, with abbreviations used in text: Népszabadság (N); Magyar Hírlap (MH); Világgazdaság (VG); Napi Gazdaság (NG); Magyar Nemzet (MN); Népszava (Nsz); Kossuth Rádió news (KR); nightly TV news (TV).
