Court annuls Golgotha resolution

A Capital Court on Thursday annulled a resolution on art relic protection which had declared Hungarian 19th-century painter Mihály Munkácsy’s painting Golgotha a protected work of art, meaning that the state cannot forbid the owner any longer to take the painting out of the country if he so wishes.

The court established that the state declaring the painting a protected work of art came after the government’s negotiations with the owner, Imre Pákh, on purchasing the painting became deadlocked.

The court ruled that the government measure infringed the right of the painting’s owner to fair proceedings and the basic principle of the rule of law had also been violated.
