Lukács papers taken from archive

The manuscripts of philosopher György Lukács were taken away from the archive in his former home, on Tuesday morning, Népszava reports.

Those in charge of the legacy reported that five staff members from the Academy of Sciences arrived unexpectedly, loaded the manuscripts into a small truck in half an hour and took them away.

The future of the Lukács legacy is not known.

The Academy of Sciences reported in early February that Academy president László Lovászi and János Kelemen, chairman of the board of trustees of the Lukács György International Foundation, had agreed that the research facility in Lukács’s former home on the Belgrád rakpart would not be shut down.

However, the Foundation said a few days later that no agreement had been concluded.

A process of emptying the flat began in the middle of January but the Academy said a renovation was under way and that Lukács’s books and the literature on him would be returned to the archive once the work was completed.
