Airport sees more US passenger traffic

Passenger traffic between Budapest Airport and the US reached 470,000 last year, although there are no direct flights to the US, the airport manager’s chief commercial officer Kam Jandu said on Tuesday.

The most popular destinations are New York, Los Angeles and Miami.

This year Polish airline LOT and American Airlines will launch direct flights linking Budapest to New York, Chicago and Philadelphia.

Jandu said he expects a rise of at least 15% in the number of passengers between Budapest and the US this year, and possibly as much as 25%.

American Airlines will fly from Budapest to Philadelphia, because the passenger control procedure is much shorter there than in New York or Washington, according to the airline’s European director Tom Lattig.

The new link might even turn a profit in its first year, he added.
