VAT fraud suspected at Mart

Construction material retailer Mart Építőipari Kereskedelmi has sought bankruptcy protection as fraud is suspected at the company, business news website Napi learnt.

The company has closed 21 of its 38 outlets temporarily and its web shop is not available, Napi said.

The tax authority NAV has launched a probe into the company’s operation, which may be related to VAT fraud unveiled last week, Napi said. The NAV said it had cracked down on a crime ring that had imported iPhones and other high-end mobile phones from Germany and Austria and in which a Mart employee may have been involved. The NAV suspects that the construction material retailer may have illegally asked for VAT returns based on fake invoices provided by this individual. The company is co-operating with the authorities.
