Exposure claims 21 fatalities

Some 21 people died in the extreme cold weather from Sunday to Wednesday, the Hungarian Social Forum announced on Thursday, HírTV reports.

The majority of them died in unheated homes or after they were hospitalised. Most of the deceased had been solitary people or elderly, ill people living in deprivation, who could not heat their homes.

The number of deaths attributed to the cold this winter reached 185 by late February.

Social affairs state secretary Károly Cziebere told HírTV on Thursday morning that the social care system has made the grade. Prime Minister’s Office head János Lázár avoided answering a question on the fatalities, saying that no deaths had occurred at state institutions.
