Hundreds on hand to cheer athletes

Hundreds of fans, family members, friends, and journalists were on hand at the Gyakorló Jégcsarnok (the Ice Hall for Practise) on early Sunday afternoon in Budapest to receive the Hungarian athletes back from the Winter Olympics.

Buses adorned with the photographs of the gold-winning Hungarian men’s short course speedskating relay team, with the caption “Congratulations” and the national flag rolled to a stop at the entrance to the hall shortly before 1 p.m.

The athletes were called to the stage one by one as part of a short welcome-home ceremony. The longest round of applause as a matter of course went to the most successful Hungarian athlete, Sándor Liu Shaolin.

“This is a great joy to see so many people come out here to welcome us home. A fantastic feeling, I have no words to express them,” he said.
