New big budget film productions coming

The media and telecoms authority NMHH has registered the production of two big-budget movies, expected to bring billions of forints into Hungary, Napi reports.

The government grants filmmakers a 25% tax refund.

The planned Hungarian budget of one production, Radioactive, is Ft 3 billion, making it eligible for a Ft 752 million saving in taxes.

The film, a Working Title production, is a biography of Marie Curie directed by Marjane Satrapi and starring Rosamund Pike.

The other production is Gemini Man by Skydance Media, a science fiction film directed by Ang Lee. Its main characters are played by Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Clive Owen.

Movie production expenditure in Hungary last year reached Ft 108.2 billion, before tax refunds of Ft 28 billion.

Film spending amounted to Ft 125.5 billion in 2016.
