Court okays “party zone” referendum

The Constitutional Court has rejected a complaint objecting to a planned referendum on closing hours in Budapest’s Seventh District, the Court announced on Wednesday.

The local plebiscite, set for February 18, would compel all bars in the area known as Budapest’s “party district” to close at midnight.

A business association argued that such a move would violate the rights of employees, suppliers, event organisers, artists and third parties working in the area.

In rejecting the petition, the Court ruled that the complaint was premature, as the restriction objected to does not yet exist, therefore no legal grievance may have occurred.

The Court said the regulations may be challenged if they come into being.
