People-smuggler caught in Canary Islands

Spanish police caught a suspected Hungarian people-smuggler on the Canary Islands on January 23 and handed him over to Hungarian authorities at Liszt Ferenc International Airport on February 6.

The Hungarian is accused of helping taxi drivers to transport illegal migrants from Hungarian reception stations to a Budapest hotel on at least 22 occasions between March and May of 2016.

From there, Moroccan, Egyptian and Iraqi drivers took the migrants to Western Europe via Austria and Slovakia.

German, Italian, Austrian and Slovak police and Europol co-operated in helping to catch the suspect.
