Police investigate metro accident

Police have detained two people as they investigate the cause of a metro accident that occurred early Wednesday between Astoria and Blaha Lujza tér on the M2 line.

One crew member was injured when two carriages collided at 2 a.m.

During maintenance work a diesel engine pushing four carriages was to proceed from Örs vezér tere to Blaha Lujza tér, but for some reason it did not stop and slammed into a maintenance train between Blaha Lujza tér and Astoria.

Maintenance personnel on the tracks and the train crew spotted the engine coming and were able to jump out of the way in time.

However, all carriages smashed into one another and flame cutters had to be used to pull them apart.

The driver of the diesel engine and his superior admitted responsibility for the accident.
