Police officer jailed for reckless use of firearm

The Capital Court has sentenced a police officer to five and half years in prison, for shooting at two men while drunk.

Last November the defendant, who had been disturbed while resting, aggressively threatened two workers, emphasising that he was a police officer, in the cellar of a Budapest residential building.

He said that unless they stopped drilling, he would cut one of their necks and shoot them.

He fired four shots into the ceiling, and another through a door.

The defendant admitted that he was drunk and dazed after taking medication.

The verdict is open to appeal. The defendant remains in custody.
