Flying Gizi at large again

Legendary thief Repülős (Flying) Gizi is to be released on Friday after 71 days in detention, Magyar Idők reports.

The 91-year-old woman has committed 200 crimes since 1953, been sentenced to a total of 40 years in prison and served 17 years in jail.

Flying Gizi easily quotes poems, speaks three languages fluently and would certainly win the gold medal in solving crossword puzzles, Magyar Idők observes.

Originally a teacher of history and Hungarian literature, she told the daily that she had never flown on an airplane. A detective came up with the nickname Repülős (Flying) after an inland flight ticket was found in her apartment during a house search following a theft. The ticket was booked in her husband’s name, she added.
