NAV cracks down on online business

Financial investigators from the National Tax and Customs Office on Tuesday raided the operators of web store Mall.hu in hundreds of locations, impounding Ft 1.5 billion worth of assets.

Detectives co-operated with the National Bureau of Investigations in eliminating a criminal organisation that operated networks of companies under the umbrella web store, Inforádió wrote.

According to the Tax and Customs Office NAV, the criminal organisation had illegally claimed refunds of Ft 4.5 billion.

NAV did not offer a name but clearly the raid was on Mall Hungary, Inforádió added. The company is directly owned by Dutch company Netretail Holding.

Some 500 financial investigators, 50 tax inspectors, 100 excise guards and experts from NAV’s IT and money-laundering division conducted the raid at 230 locations.

The National Bureau of Investigation took part in the operation with 282 agents. Some 49 witnesses were questioned and two suspects were taken into custody.

The agents impounded 39 cars, Ft 42 million and €208,000 in cash, froze 100 bank accounts and seized 10 properties and commodities linked to the businesses of the perpetrators.
