Inspections find 39% of GPs absent

Unannounced inspections of family doctors’ offices in 2023 raised concerns about the efficiency of healthcare services, as in many cases inspectors found neither consulting rooms nor an office, according to the Interior Ministry.

In 39% of cases the doctor was not even in the office.

Follow-up inspections showed persistent errors, with one-third of doctors unreachable by phone outside their practices.

On subsequent visits, 12% of offices were not found and only 75% displayed clear office hours.

Inspectors visited 569 general practitioners and primary care dentists in Baranya, Tolna, Vas and Győr-Moson-Sopron counties in February and March 2023.

A GP who spoke to Népszava stressed that doctors’ working hours also include caring for patients in their homes, administrative tasks and the purchase of equipment.

The ministry plans further checks in the coming months.
