Cabinet cancels March 15 celebration

The cabinet has accepted a recommendation by the emergency staff and decided to cancel the March 15 commemorations in the garden of the National Museum.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has in recent years delivered a speech at that venue to mark the national holiday.

As local council commemorations have no nationwide impact, local organisers decide on those, the cabinet decided.

Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced on Facebook on Saturday that Budapest will not be staging its own March 15 commemoration, in accordance with a proposal by the government emergency staff.

“I hope that the threat of epidemic can be overcome as soon as possible and then we can make up for the cancelled meeting”.
