Anniversary of Budapest Ghetto liberation marked

The 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Budapest ghetto was marked at the Dohány utca memorial wall on Friday.

Some 68,000 Hungarian Jews escaped almost certain death when, on January 17, 1945, Soviet troops reached the ghetto in the centre of Budapest. Some 3,000 unburied bodies were recovered from Klauzál tér alone.

Slomó Köves, leading rabbi of the United Hungarian Jewish Religious Community, said at the memorial that the hatred of those responsible should not be remembered with more hatred but with dignity.

Seventh District mayor Péter Niedermüller said that what happened in the Seventh District and the whole of Budapest in the winter of 1944 and 1945 was the “shame of the nation”.
