Police announce huge heroin haul

Police have confiscated 69.1 kilograms of heroin in Budapest, one of the largest drug seizures in Hungary’s history.

The contraband was part of a much larger shipment of 730 kilograms bound for Budapest which was discovered at the Slovene port of Koper.

Slovene authorities had earlier seized 661 kilograms of the shipment but allowed the rest to travel to Hungary.

The street value of the drug haul is estimated at Ft 17.5 billion, the biggest heroin haul in the past 20 years.

Police learned in the first half of 2019 that Richárd K. of Budapest wanted to smuggle a considerable quantity of drugs to Hungary. The Slovene customs authority found the heroin in Koper on October 20 hidden in foil in a container bound from Iran to Hungary.

The shipment – minus 660 kilograms – arrived at a Hungarian destination on November 5, from where Richárd K. placed it in a warehouse rented by him. He was arrested shortly thereafter.

Detectives searched his flat, where they found small quantities of tablets suspected to be drugs, as well as Ft 7 million and €69,450 in cash. Police also seized 69.1 kilograms of substances suspected to be illegal drugs.
