Erdogan visit snarls Buda traffic

The visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the Gül Baba tomb yesterday evening paralysed traffic in central Buda and left hundreds of people stranded for an hour, while roads were sealed off for his motorcade, according to reports.

Due to the suspension of tram and metro traffic during the evening rush hour, over a thousand people were kept waiting at Margit Bridge. Several hundred more were confined to the underpass at Batthyány tér.

On Margit körút, parents confined by police barricades who were anxious to collect their children from kindergartens shouted at police, who shouted back. Many jeered Erdogan’s motorcade when it eventually rolled past after an hour.

Mayor Gergely Karácsony said what happened was unacceptable.
