Cabinet to spend Ft 327bn on sports

The cabinet allocates Ft 327 billion to sports in next year’s budget, four times more than in the 2010 budget, and Ft 24 billion more than this year, sports state secretary Tünde Szabó told a press conference on Thursday.

Szabó noted that International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said during the world fencing championships that ended on Tuesday that Budapest “has undoubtedly become one of the world’s most significant sports capitals”.

This affirms the cabinet’s intention to handle sport as an investment and a strategic sector, Szabó said, since it benefits the economy and tourism.

Hungary will arrange nearly 150 sports events this year.

The European Maccabi Games, starting in Budapest next week, provide those interested with an opportunity to get acquainted with Jewish culture, Szabó added.

Former women’s chess world champion Judit Polgár will open the games.

Szabó recalled that the first Hungarian male and female Olympic champions – Alfréd Hajós and Ilona Elek – were of Jewish ancestry.
