Rainfall record almost doubled

During this week’s intense rains more rain fell in a day in many towns than the overall average for May.

Some 141.2mm of rain fell in Dédes¬tapolcsány (between Miskolc and Ózd) in 24 hours on Wednesday, a new record for Hungary for that date, the National Meteorological Service announced.

The previous record of 84.1mm was measured in Dobogókő in the Pilis mountains in 1998.

A road collapsed under the weight of the sudden rain in Borsod county on Tuesday.

The heavy rains arrived right at the time of acacia blooming, affecting beekeepers, who could go bankrupt.

Meteorologists say more rain is to be expected in the next few days, but in lesser amounts.
