Meininger opens Ft 6bn hotel

UK-based Meininger Hotels opened its first unit in the Central and Eastern European region in downtown Budapest near the Great Market Hall on Thursday, following a Ft 6 billion investment.

The seven-storey, 184-room hotel with 7500m2 of space also features family apartments and multi-bed dorms.

The project was financed by Bedori Investment, owned by Hungarians.

Meininger sees huge potential in the Hungarian market, said chief operating officer Thomas Hagemann.

The company is thinking about opening another unit in Budapest, or in one of the larger towns in Hungary, he said, naming Debrecen as a particularly interesting possibility.

Meininger’s network could grow to 30 with the planned three openings scheduled for this year. The hotel chain is examining investment possibilities in Warsaw, Krakow and Belgrade.
