EU to subsidise open society NGOs

Fidesz MEP Kinga Gál expressed outrage yesterday after the European Parliament voted to make €850 million available to European NGOs that campaign for an open and receptive society.

She said it is completely unacceptable that “the pro-migrant majority in the European Parliament” would provide resources for NGOs that openly help immigration.

Gál’s statement responds to a resolution under which the subsidy extended to NGOs protecting democratic values would be tripled in the 2021-27 EU budget framework.

A total of €1.8 billion would be laid aside for the programme called European Rights and Values, instead of the originally scheduled €642 million.

The proposal was approved with 426 affirmative votes against 152 dissensions.
