Szijjártó opens consulates in UK

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó formally opened a Hungarian consulate in Manchester, England and another in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Thursday.

In a speech in Manchester, Szijjártó observed that the approximately 70,000 Hungarian students in northern England – 30,000 of them in the Manchester region and 10,000 in the city itself – have until now had to go to London to take care of official Hungary-related matters.

He underlined that Hungary is sorry to see Great Britain leave the EU, as it is an ally and friend of Hungary, and provides common-sense responses to challenges affecting Europe, but will do its best to preserve the closest possible co-operation with the UK.

Szijjártó also opened a consulate in Edinburgh to help boost Hungarian-Scottish relations. He said about 10,000 Hungarians live in or near Edinburgh.
