Government to curb plastic bag use

The Innovation and Technology Ministry is planning to increase the environmental fee on light plastic bags from next year, as well as fees on plastic cups and cutlery, Index learned from a draft bill.

The ministry announced that it plans to eventually ban the use of light plastic bags, most likely from 2021.

The use of plastic bags will probably be banned from July 1, 2019 because they pose a threat to humans as they only degrade to small plastic particles which cannot be collected but which can enter the food chain.

The bill could be announced near the end of September.

So far some 120,000 people have signed the petition on banning plastic bags started by Greenpeace since early June.
