People-smuggler gets 25 years

Kecskemét Court sentenced an Afghan people-smuggler to 25 years in prison on Thursday.

The first defendant ran the team of criminals whose negligence led to the deaths of 71 refugees as they suffocated in a lorry on an Austrian motorway lay-by en route from Hungary to the West in 2015.

The court also confiscated Ft 94 million worth of assets from the first defendant, who will be expelled from Hungary on completion of his sentence.

The other defendants received varying jail terms, and were ordered to pay Ft 73 million in trial expenses. The Hungarian state will bear the remaining Ft 106 million sum.
