Theatre artistic director sacked

Artistic director Gábor Miklós Kerényi has been sacked from the Budapest Operetta Theatre, having violated regulations, months after several people accused him of sexual harassment.

Following the accusations last autumn, Kerényi and the theatre launched an internal inquiry. He then requested early retirement.

After he was relieved of duties (he was not allowed to work in the theatre on Nagymező utca) Kerényi was permitted to continue drawing his salary while his retirement procedure was under way.

However, the theatre management said Kerényi had violated regulations in a recent media interview.

The press chief said Kerényi’s working relationship ceased on April 13, as his attitude jeopardised the theatre’s reputation and financial interests.
