Mészáros eying Hotel Gellért

A hotel management company owned by Lőrinc Mészáros, a businessman reportedly close to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, will soon purchase Danubius Hotel Gellért, situated in the 11th District in Budapest, investigative news website Zoom learned from unnamed sources in the hotel industry.

Mészáros’s firm Konzum, which has acquired the Hunguest Hotel chain and now owns 18 hotels in Hungary and another five abroad, could be the buyer, Zoom said. Konzum is still in need of a prestigious or emblematic hotel, such as the Gellért, it added.

Mészáros would also like to purchase the adjacent Gellért bath, the sources added. Budapest Gyógyfürdői, a company owned by the city of Budapest, owns the bath. The Gellért bath is prospering thus the city of Budapest has no interest in selling it, Zoom added.
