Hungarian hostage returns home safe

The Hungarian citizen kidnapped by Nigerian pirates on October 21 was freed and returned to Budapest accompanied by staff members of the Counter-Terrorism Centre TEK on Saturday, the TEK announced.

The TEK had been working with international partners and the Foreign Ministry over the past few weeks to see him and his fellow hostages return safely, the TEK said in its statement.

Earlier press reports said pirates attacked a German container ship off Nigeria’s coast on October 21 and abducted six people.

TEK leader János Hajdú told M1 channel on Sunday that the release was achieved through negotiations and no force was used. Hungarian and German experts negotiated with the hostage-takers. He said Hungary has not, nor will it pay ransom in such cases.
