Herzog heirs sue Hungary, museums

Descendents of Baron Lipót Mór Herzog this week filed a lawsuit against the Hungarian state and several museums in the US District Court in Washington, The New York Times reports.

The heirs are demanding the return of the Jewish banker’s $100 million art collection, which was looted in 1944. The collection includes paintings by El Greco, Courbet, Alonso Cano and Mihály Munkácsy, and are on public display in Hungary, Népszabadság writes.

Herzog’s heirs have unsuccessfully tried to reclaim the paintings through Hungary’s judicial system for the last decade.
