New local election regulations

Hungarians will elect 10,000 fewer local council members than the present 26,000-27,000 at the October 3 local elections, as several regulations will change.

Under changes enacted last month, the time allotted for collecting nomination slips from eligible voters will drop from five weeks to 15 days. The number required to field a county council list rises from 0.3% of eligible voters to 1%.

In Budapest, mayoral candidates must obtain signatures from 2% of eligible voters instead of 0.5%, as in the past. This means that candidates must collect at least 26,000 nominations in 15 days. To date, candidates had to collect fewer than 7,000 signatures in 35 days.
