Gay pride festival consults with police
The 15th Budapest Pride gay festival will be staged in the capital next week.
Some 2,500 people are expected to take part in the parade along Andrássy út next Saturday, which will be from Heroes Square to Oktogon, and not to Erzsébet tér as in previous years. Police will also secure all gay-friendly entertainment spots and festival venues.
Consultations with the police to ensure participants’ safety have been ongoing since April, Rainbow Mission Foundation president Sándor Steigler told MTI Wednesday.
The event has been disrupted by extremists over the last two years. Police detained 41 people last year, while in the previous year 23 civilians and 12 police officers were injured when hundreds of radical counter-demonstrators attacked the marchers.
The Young Christian Democrat Federation (IKSZ) sincerely hopes that the organisers and participants of the gay pride procession will this year desist from provocative remarks and scenes experienced in the past few years, with which they drew apprehension from broad sections of society, the IKSZ said in a statement on Wednesday.
